Second graders in Room 1 continue to collaborate, stay engaged, and learn together in 2017!
We are becoming great researches in Reader's and Writer's Workshop. We are experts on certain topics and are growing knowledge across many different books. We are noticing parts within multiple books that go together and adding to what we know as we read more and more. We are able to retell the BIG and main ideas about the topics we are reading about.
We have used this knowledge and these skills to help us with our informational writing as well. We are researching a topic of our choice using multiple websites as well as a variety of texts. Be on the look out for our informational reports that will include text features such as glossaries, photographs with captions, diagrams and more.
We loved chatting with new 2nd grade friends via Google Hangouts ! They joined us all the way from Wisconsin! Since they live in a different time zone, planning was difficult but we finally connected. They had 22 students in their class and the children were from all over the world. They represented every continent except Antarctica and Australia. We can't wait to connect with them again as we study different cultures.!
Collaboration and communication are key when working together on STEM activities! The students were given a minimal amount of materials, instructions, and expectations and off they went to try and make the largest paper chain as well as a paper Christmas tree that had to be able to stand on its own! I think we have some engineers among us.
In math we had fun exploring plane shapes and solid figures. We compared shapes, created new shapes, and sorted them noticing their many attributes. Now we are figuring out tough number patters and skip counting within numbers all the way to 1,000 while we continue to becoming more fluent with our addition and subtraction facts as well as problem solvers.
Coding has also been a favorite and something we enjoy doing to make us think and problem solve !
