The students are working hard in all areas.
We are becoming better readers using many strategies to help us comprehend what we read, read with accuracy, read fluently, and expand our vocabulary. The Daily 5 is running smoothly. The children are very responsible and get right to work in their stations of choice: (Read to Self, Read to Someone, work on Writing, Listening to Reading, Word Work...& Work with Teacher). We are reading books and discussing character traits and recognizing how characters change due to events in a story. Together, we are discussing the theme in various stories as well as the moral or lesson the main characters learned.
We are becoming great young authors as we practice stretching out our sentences to "show" not "tell" by being very "specific" instead of "general" with the use of powerful language. They are using sentence variety so not to sound like a "broken record" and are using elaborate sentences to avoid writing a "grocery list". Stop in to see our class book, "The Sights and Sounds of the Durham Fair".
In Math we are practicing our facts daily and strategies that will help us become more fluent with our addition and subtraction facts. We often use the smartboard and/or play games to practice these strategies. We are solving word problems as well as writing our own and solving each others. Most recently, we are working with arrays to practice repeated addition and beginning multiplication.
We are working on a very exciting Research project with the help of Mrs. Petroski. The students are researching hurricanes, tornados, thunder & lightning storms, and blizzards in order to answer the question: "How do you prepare for a major storm?". They are independently using the chrome books to research on Pebble Go as well as with informational texts. We even got to skype with NBC meteorologist, Ryan Hanrahan.
We enjoyed our first field trip to Connwood forests to explore the deciduous and coniferous forests. We had a beautiful day to hike and enjoy the beautiful fall colors. Check out our Special Events page to see some fun field trip photos.
We are excited for Halloween. Parents, we will be having a party in the classroom at 1:45-2:30. The school parade begins at 2:30. :)
