Happy Holidays, Room 1 families!! I want to let you know how well our class is doing in all areas! We are making great progress having meaningful conversations and doing terrific work.
The holidays are fast approaching. We continue to work hard here in Room 1 !
We have been very busy during Writers Workshop writing funny narrative stories about Santa getting stuck in the chimney, how we will make the Grinch grin, and letters convincing Santa that we belong on his Nice List. These pieces will be coming home before the end of the week to enjoy over the holidays.
We finished our informational unit in Reader's Workshop and have transitioned back to fiction books. To end the unit, each child gave a book tour and taught the class some important facts they learned while becoming an "expert on a topic". They did a great job!! The kids are choosing a fiction series now where they will get to know the main character very well. Some characters we are getting to know are Jack and Annie, Mr. Putty, Horrible Harry, Stink, and Judy Moody. Thank you for encouraging your child to read every night at home.
We are having fun in Science learning about the states of Matter. Recently, we tested materials to see if they were durable, absorbent, waterproof, and flexible. They worked in pairs to see which material would be best to make a bridge. They tested each material (card stock, construction paper, cloth, wax paper, and aluminum foil) dry and wet and used pennies as the weights to test the durability. They concluded that using card stock wrapped in aluminum foil would work best because the card stock was durable and could hold up while the aluminum foil repelled the water and would keep the card stock dry. I loved listening to them have educated discussions and observations. We had a blast at the CT Science Center. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who were able to join us!!
We just completed our Geometry unit in Math. We continue to practice our math facts within 20 to become more fluent and our application skills when solving many different kinds of word problems. We will be starting Unit 3 which is addition and subtraction within 100.
Upcoming events:
Winter concert- Wednesday, 12/20 @ 2:15
Holiday class party- Friday, 12/22 @ 9:30
Early dismissal- Friday, 12/22 @ 1:20
12/25-1/1/2018- Holiday Recess.
Wishing you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year!
