I can't believe it is already November! This year is flying by. It's true what they say, "Time flies when you're having fun!"
We have been working hard this autumn on all subjects. I am especially pleased with the social growth second graders are making in Room 1. We are working on taking responsibility for our actions, always trying our best, never giving up, viewing mistakes as welcome learning opportunities, and treating each other with respect and kindness.
I am so thankful for my wonderful students and their supportive families!
Readers Workshop:
We are deep into our first informational (non-fiction) reading unit. The kids have enjoyed learning about all different kinds of things in the books they are choosing to read. I've been monitoring student progress in reading by conferring, small group instruction, and individual reading assessments.
Please continue to encourage your child to read at least 10 minutes a day and remember to log the reading minutes on your child's "About my Day" Sheet.
Writing:
We have been writing lots of entertaining narrative stories in Room 1! They are becoming great young authors. The kids are including figurative language, great vocabulary to really "show" what is happening, not just "tell", and creating a scene instead of a summary for their action packed main events.
Math
We are finishing up our Place Value Unit , where we are learning different ways to show a number (standard form, expanded form, picture form, and number words. They are enjoying Math Workshop where they get to communicate, create, and problem solve with partners and group members while becoming strong mathematicians. I love listening to their "math talk".
Science
We have started our first Science unit on Matter. They children are exploring different objects and grouping them according to their attributes. They were able to explore balloons that were filled with air, water, and ice. They noticed and wondered lots of great things. As we progress through the unit, they will understand what materials would work BEST to build a strong, safe house for the 4th little pig so that the big bad wolf can't blow it down. Thank you all for helping by sending in paper towel and toilet paper rolls!
Halloween was very fun. Thank you to our room Moms, Julie Sass, Audrey Kane, and Lisa Seales, for organizing a fun filled afternoon w/ lots of goodies, crafts, books and games! You ladies rock! The kids looked great during the parade.
We have Pen Pals this year! Sienna's mom is a first grade teacher in Wallingford and we have started receiving and writing letters to get to know a new friend. The kids were so excited to get mail and to write back to their new pal. Great idea Erin Clark!
